Solar solution saves Samat 900 litres of diesel and 2.4 tonnes of CO2 per truck each year

Samat started with two test trucks and expected a 1% CO2 reduction. Today, 34 solar-equipped trucks have reduced emissions by 7%

At a time when sustainability and financial responsibility are more relevant than ever, Samat International AB has made a bold and great effort to combine both. Their investment in installing solar panels on their trucks has proven to be not only profitable, but also a powerful way to reduce CO2 emissions. The results speak for themselves: each truck now saves around 900 litres of diesel annually, resulting in a reduction of 2.4 tonnes of CO2 per truck each year.

From test to triumph

Samat started with a test involving two solar- equipped trucks. They expected a 1% saving in CO2 emissions, but reality quickly exceeded expectations. The investment in solar panel solutions turned out to be both economically and environmentally beneficial. The diesel savings alone provided a financial payback in just 12 months. But that’s not all – the solar panels enabled the trucks to go from 50 hours of idling per year to almost zero hours. This impressive achievement convinced Samat that it was time to expand. They invested in ten more trucks equipped with solar panels and started collecting data from 59 comparable trucks – 12 with solar panels and 47 without.

After a 15-month data analysis, where more than 4 million kilometres were driven, the results were even better than they could have hoped for. Besides the significant diesel savings and CO2 reductions, they saw extended battery life and increased battery reliability, with battery-related breakdowns and call-outs reduced.

A journey beyond expectations

Today, Samat has 34 trucks equipped with solar panels, which has led to an overall 7% reduction in emissions, a 21% reduction in idling, and a doubling of battery life.

Jon Nilsson and Fredrik Olsson from Samat share their climate goals, initial hopes for the solar solution, and the impressive results they’ve seen in action.

Explore more of the benefits of CIGS Solar Panels

The CIGS solar panel is often recognised on its slim profile, its flexibility and its low weight. CIGS solar panels are better than conventional solar panels in almost every aspect, when it comes to sustainability efforts and especially durability.
