As part of their green transition, DEKRA is integrating Green Energy’s solar solution into their fleet to complement its electrification efforts. This collaboration underlines a key message: achieving sustainability in transport requires not only electrification but also solar. 

Addressing the challenges of full electrification 

DEKRA has already made significant progress in reducing their CO2 footprint by investing in electric trucks. However, electrifying the entire fleet is a long-term and costly process. Electric trucks are still three times more expensive than traditional diesel trucks, and additional investments in charging infrastructure are required. Therefore, solutions that optimise the existing fleet are a necessary and realistic part of the journey toward a greener transport sector. 

Pilot project with solar panels  

To take a step towards more sustainable operations, DEKRA has installed solar panels on five of their trucks – four sets of 240 Wp and one set of 380 Wp. The first three units were installed in Brøndby in February and the remaining two were installed in Brabrand in March. 

By integrating solar panel solutions into their fleet, DEKRA expects to reduce diesel consumption by up to 900 litres per truck. This not only means lower fuel costs but also a significant reduction in CO2 emissions. With a total fleet of approximately 140 trucks, Green Energy’s solar solution can play a key role in helping DEKRA achieve their sustainability goals. 

“Last year we converted 10 trucks from diesel to battery electric, which has already contributed to a reduction in our CO2 emissions. However, electrification of all heavy vehicles is a long-term process, not only because of the cost of the electric trucks, but also because it requires investment in charging equipment and capacity expansion. That’s why we are exploring how we can optimise our existing fleet with solutions such as solar panels, while gradually moving to more electric vehicles,” says Christen Bagger, CEO of DEKRA Denmark.

With the arrival of spring, now is the perfect time to talk about solar. After a full year of data collection, we’re delighted to share the results of a comparative study with Samat International AB, one of Europe’s leading logistics companies. The results are clear: Green Energy solar systems deliver real value, both environmentally and financially. 

From Pilot to Proof – and Payback 

Following a successful pilot in 2023, this extended study tracked the performance of 44 trucks over 12 months: 21 equipped with identical Green Energy 165 Wp solar panels and 23 standard diesel trucks as a control group. The fleet, consisting of Scania and Volvo trucks, carried similar loads, covered an average annual mileage of 89.957 km per truck, and operated under comparable conditions and routes throughout 2024. 

Here’s what we found. The solar-powered trucks achieved: 

• 6,9% average annual fuel savings  

• 1.478 litres of diesel saved per truck per year  

• 92,3 kWh of solar energy produced per vehicle  

• €1.921 annual fuel cost saving per truck 

• 3,96 tonnes of CO₂ emissions avoided per truck per year 

That’s a payback period of just 11 months from the fuel savings alone! 

But that’s not all. Our solar solution also has a positive effect on operational efficiency. Samat and other customers report significant reductions in idling time, in turn reducing unnecessary fuel consumption, extending battery and alternator life, and lowering operating costs. They also report fewer battery-related breakdowns and callouts, reducing downtime and cost. 

A scalable solution for every fleet 

With rising fuel prices, ambitious sustainability goals and tightening regulatory requirements, fleet owners are under increasing pressure to reduce costs and emissions without compromising operations. The results of this study confirm that solar offers a simple, scalable solution. Our solar panels provide transport companies with a transitional technology that makes an immediate impact on emissions and fuel efficiency at a small fraction of the investment cost. It works reliably in real-world conditions, requires no changes to routes or fueling infrastructure, and delivers payback in less than a year.  

Samat was so happy with the results that so far in 2025, they have installed 20 brand new DAF trucks with our solar systems from Day 1.  

While this study focused on long-haul trucks, our solar systems can be installed on almost any type of vehicle – helping fleets of all sizes to cut fuel consumption, reduce maintenance needs and meet environmental goals with minimal disruption.

Green Energy spoke with Jim Malmqvist the Workshop Manager at STS Helsingborg, who shared his experience of installing Green Energy’s solar panels.

“My role involves supporting our customers in reducing costs and minimising downtime by finding the best solutions for their needs,” says Jim, the Workshop Manager at STS Helsingborg. “At the same time, we strive to explore environmentally friendly options whenever possible, providing added value for both the customer and the environment.”

Hvad er en EPD?

En miljøvaredeklaration (EPD) er et standardiseret dokument, der vurderer og rapporterer et produkts miljøpåvirkning gennem hele dets livscyklus, fra udvinding af råmaterialer til bortskaffelse. En EPD er udviklet i overensstemmelse med anerkendte europæiske og internationale standarder og indeholder vigtige data om:

• Carbon footprint og udledning af drivhusgasser
• Energi- og ressourceforbrug
• Affaldsgenerering og materialegenvinding

Vores produktspecifikke EPD er i overensstemmelse med EN15804+A2:2019 og fokuserer på miljøpåvirkningen fra vores solpaneler (75 Wp og 150Wp), hvilket giver nøjagtige data, der afspejler vores produkters fulde livscyklus.

Hvorfor er det vigtigt?

For arkitekter, ingeniører og byggefolk tilbyder EPD’er troværdige miljøoplysninger, der kan integreres i livscyklusvurderinger (LCA) og bæredygtighedscertificeringer af bygninger, såsom DGNB. Med strengere EU-regler, der træder i kraft i 2025, herunder obligatoriske CO₂-emissionsgrænser for byggeprojekter, vil det blive stadig vigtigere at bruge materialer med verificerede miljødata.

Green Energys EPD-verificerede solpaneler

EPD-verifikationen af vores solpaneler sikrer, at deres påstande om bæredygtighed understøttes af uafhængigt validerede data. Vurderingen følger en vugge-til-grav-metode for livscyklusvurdering (LCA) og giver en samlet måling af CO2-fodaftryk på 9,86 g CO₂e pr. kWh. Lette og holdbare solpaneler

Vores vedvarende engagement i bæredygtighed

Vi er engagerede i miljømæssig ansvarlighed og hjælper fagfolk i branchen med at navigere i kravene til overholdelse, samtidig med at vi fremmer bæredygtig byggepraksis. Da byggereglerne udvikler sig til at lægge vægt på klimapåvirkning, forstår vi vigtigheden af at bidrage til energicertificeringer og LCA-beregninger (Life Cycle Assessment).

Efterhånden som efterspørgslen efter bæredygtige løsninger vokser, vil Green Energy fortsætte med at innovere for at sikre, at vi lever op til de højeste standarder for miljømæssig ansvarlighed. The EPD provides transparent, independently verified data on the environmental impact of our solar panels, reinforcing our commitment to sustainability and helping architects, engineers, and developers make informed decisions for their projects. It documents the carbon footprint of our solar panels from cradle to grave, and verifies that they have a low carbon emissions profile of 9.86 g CO₂e per kWh.

Our LCA and EPD report was prepared by Artelia, one of Denmark’s largest multidisciplinary engineering consultancies. Their expertise and guidance played a key role in ensuring that our EPD verification process met the highest standards. This report was then verified by EPD Denmark.

What is an EPD? 

An Environmental Product Declaration (EPD) is a standardised document that assesses and reports the environmental impact of a product throughout its entire life cycle, from raw material extraction to disposal. Developed in accordance with recognised European and international standards, an EPD provides essential data on: 

– Carbon footprint and greenhouse gas emissions 

– Energy and resource consumption 

– Waste generation and material recovery 

Our product-specific EPD is in accordance with EN15804+A2:2019 and focuses on the environmental impact of our solar panels (75 Wp and 150Wp), providing accurate data that reflects the full life cycle of our products.  

Why Does It Matter? 

For architects, engineers, and construction professionals, EPDs offer credible environmental information that can be integrated into Life Cycle Assessments (LCA) and building sustainability certifications, such as DGNB. With stricter EU regulations coming into force in 2025, including mandatory CO₂ emission limits for construction projects, using materials with verified environmental data will become increasingly important. 

Green Energy’s EPD-verified solar panels 

The EPD verification of our solar panels ensures that their sustainability claims are backed by independently validated data. The assessment follows a cradle-to-grave Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, and gives a total carbon footprint measurement of 9.86 g CO₂e per kWh. This provides architects and developers with accurate, product-specific data rather than relying on industry averages. Green Energy’s solar panels are among the few solar panels with EPD declarations. With their low CO2e emissions profile of 9.86 g CO2e per kWh, they are the ideal choice for sustainable building and construction projects.
