CIGS sustainability

Sustainable Solar Panels

Green Energy’s CIGS Solar Panels are sustainable solar panels in multiple ways. Renewable energy is being generated, and the panels are made of fewer raw materials than conventional crystalline solar panels.

Sustainability on the agenda

We exist to effect change

Being a supplier of solar solutions and working towards renewable energy can be seen as a goal in itself. But our story goes beyond just being a supplier of green energy. It is also a story about having respect for the planet and the people who live on it, which is why we produce some of the most sustainable solar panels available on the market.

Relatively few raw materials are used in the production of our solar panels – and far less compared with traditional crystalline solar panels. At the end of life, the panels can be reused, or separated and recycled.

Our solar panels have an Environmental Product Declaration from EPD Denmark. A LCA and EPD report was prepared by Artelia, one of Denmark’s largest multidisciplinary engineering consultancies. This report was then 3rd-party verified by EPD Denmark. It documents the carbon footprint of our solar panels from cradle to grave, and verifies that they have a low carbon emissions profile of 9.86 g CO₂e per kWh. Read the EPD
EPBT, or Energy Pay Back Time, measures how long it takes for a solar panel to generate as much electricity as was used to manufacture it. Compared to C-Si solar cells, CIGS cells have a significantly lower EPBT due to their thinner design and reduced raw material requirements. While C-Si cells typically have an EPBT of 5 years or even up to 48 years, CIGS cells average only 1.7 years. Our company has achieved an impressive EPBT of just 1 year, thanks to our ongoing efforts to minimize resource consumption.
Our solar panels have a 25-year performance guarantee and are designed to have a long lifespan. This cuts down on the frequency of replacements and reduces waste in landfills.

Green Energy has also explored second life possibilities for our solar panels in partnership with Sabona, a Norwegian non-profit. Through the Second Life Project, we have repurposed end-of-life solar panels into solar-powered boreholes that provide clean water for small communities in Zimbabwe. Learn more about the project.

The CIGS solar panel is often recognised on its slim profile, its flexibility and its low weight. CIGS solar panels are better than conventional solar panels in almost every aspect, when it comes to sustainability efforts and especially durability.
